Rating: 3/4 --
Most movies claiming to be based on fact pour on the melodrama, but this one basically just sticks to the real story, which has all the emotional wallop that's needed.

Meryl Streep received yet another Oscar nomination for this conventional biopic of the Harlem music teacher, directed by no other than horror maestro wes Craven.

The standard plotline of a teacher bearing the torch of liberal enlightenment to an educationally bereft group comes off rather dubiously here.

Doesn't revolve around a self-centered main character or possess the schmaltz of Mr. Holland's Opus.

It may be premature to think Craven just doesn't spark outside the horror genre, but there's nothing here to suggest the opposite.

Music of the Heart is nothing if not a change of pace, and, unfortunately, Craven doesn't appear entirely comfortable in these new surroundings.

Product Description:
The uplifting true story of violin teacher Roberta Guaspari (Streep), a woman who battled insurmountable odds to teach underprivileged children in East Harlem the gift of music. As Roberta struggles to convince a skeptical school board--as well as skeptical parents--that this music will help the children immensely, she must conquer seemingly insurmountable odds to do just that. Eventually, she does. Based on the documentary SMALL WONDERS, MUSIC OF THE HEART proves that Craven is more than just a horror director.
